Super Bowl LIX Gatorade Plunge

 Super Bowl LIX Gatorade Plunge

Every year when the Super Bowl rolls around thousands of people place bets and wonder what the Gatorade pour color of the winning team will be. Jim Burt for the New York Giants started the tradition by soaking head coach Bill Parcells out of spite in 1984 with a Gatorade bath, then aging in 1987 during Super Bowl XXI. Since the first bath in 1987, it has been a long-standing tradition for the winning team at the Super Bowl to dump an icy Gatorade cooler on the winning team's head coach. The color variations that many try to bet between are blue, orange, yellow, purple, clear, and none with the first ice bath in 1987 being orange.

This past weekend was Super Bowl LIX the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, the Eagles won the game 22 to 40. Before the game was even over the Eagles teammates poured the Gatorade cooler filled with yellow Gatorade on Head Coach Nick Sirianni. Surprising the head coach due to having two minutes left on the clock.

However yellow was the winner for the pour, and orange has been the favorite pick for teams with five Super Bowls under its belt. Purple, clear, blue, yellow, and none hot on its tails with each color now having four Super Bowl appearances since Super Bowl 35.

  1. Nice post! I always think it's fun to try to guess what color the gatorade will be, and I appreciate you giving some background on the tradition as well.
